Book a drop-in at two of Amsterdam's best BJJ gyms (Roger Gracie Academy Amsterdam and 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu Amsterdam) for €25 a class. Bookings are confirmed instantly, so there's no need to message the gym first.
Each gym's listing shows its live timetable, head coach, facilities and kit requirements, so you can compare academies and choose the session that suits your training and your trip.
The Netherlands is best known for kickboxing, but Amsterdam also has a well-established Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu scene. Roger Gracie Academy Amsterdam's head coach, Francesco Moica, comes from Roger Gracie's lineage, and 10th Planet Amsterdam is led by head coach Emad Ahmedin, a black belt in Eddie Bravo's 10th Planet no-gi system.
Amsterdam is also home to several other established academies. Carlson Gracie Amsterdam in Amsterdam-West runs gi and no-gi classes, a women-only class and kids' classes. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Amsterdam in De Pijp is the only Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Centre in the Netherlands, teaching the Gracie University self-defence curriculum. Eastbound Gym in Amsterdam-Oost offers gi and no-gi BJJ classes alongside kickboxing, boxing and fitness.
Amsterdam's BJJ gyms sit outside the busy canal-ring centre, in the city's residential districts. Roger Gracie Academy Amsterdam is in Amsterdam-West, and 10th Planet Amsterdam is in Amsterdam-Oost.
Amsterdam is an easy city to train in while you travel. Most visitors get around by bike, tram or metro, and the city's academies are in residential districts rather than the centre, so check the journey from where you're staying when you choose a session.
Kit rules vary from gym to gym. Some academies require a rashguard under your gi, while no-gi academies such as 10th Planet don't run gi classes at all, so check the gym's listing before you pack. Arrive about ten minutes early so the coach can show you around, and mention your belt and any injuries before class.
If you're in Amsterdam for more than a couple of days, an open mat is a good way to fit in extra rounds and meet local grapplers.
